Two Different “Christianities”

Two different religions currently live together in the same house called “Christianity.” There are a number of ways to describe and delineate the distinction between the two
different “Christianities.” One way to distinguish between them is in terms of which world is in focus. One form of “Christianity” is primarily concerned with this world (Heb. “Olam Ha-Zeh”) and the affairs of its kingdoms, while the other form of Christianity is primarily concerned with the world to come (Heb. “Olam Ha-Ba”) and the affairs of its Kingdom.

The cohabitation of these two distinct religions is problematic. In certain ways and on certain topics the two are able to coexist amicably, indeed even able to temporarily forget that their differences exist. But when the rubber meets the road on many things that matter most, including on issues of life and death, the two are irreconcilable. When circumstances arise that bring the chasm between the two to the forefront you either see schism and painful division or (more frequently) the world-to-comers are tempted to capitulate to the this-world constituency in pursuit of “maintaining unity.”

Unity is indeed desirable among things which indeed share the same essence, which indeed belong together. Unity, however, is not a desirable property for things which fundamentally do not belong together. I suggest that these two different Christianities are fundamentally different, such that pseudo-unity between them is more harmful (in some sense to both) than beneficial.
