Zach’s Blog

Dear Christian people.

We have a huge mistake with gigantic consequences to reckon with.

The book of Revelation is not primarily about just the final few years before the end of the world. It is about the “things that must soon take place” when John wrote it around 96AD.

What things would take place soon after Jesus’ angel communicated this vision to John? We are not left to merely speculate. The text tells us a number of things which at that very time were right on the cusp of unfolding:

  1. God was poised to come and remove Ephesus’ lampstand from its place.
  2. Smyrnans were about to be thrown into prison and tested for “ten days.”
  3. Jesus was standing ready to come to Pergamum and fight against the followers of “Balaam” and the Nicolaitans.
  4. The Lord was in the process of throwing “Jezebel” onto a sickbed, and those committing adultery with her into great tribulation.
  5. The one who holds the seven stars was preparing to come against the church of Sardis like a thief.
  6. The members of the synagogue of Satan were about to be forced to bow down before the feet of the Philadelphian saints.
  7. Lukewarm Laodicean water would soon be spit out of the Faithful Witness’ mouth.

OK, so hopefully we can agree that some very significant changes were poised to soon take place among seven churches of the Roman Province of Asia Minor in Western Anatolia in the first century AD. But what does that have to do with dragons, beasts, trumpets, rivers of blood, and miscellaneous other parts of the vision that are hard to fully understand but certainly sound like they have to do with God’s judgment on a wicked world? Good question! First Peter 4:17-19 does a great job of drawing it all together for us:

For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And

“If the righteous is scarcely saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

“It is time for judgment to begin at the household of God” is a pretty good summary of the book of Revelation as a whole. It is a book of judgment; few would argue against that. But what I want you to hear is that it is a book of judgment that begins at the household of God.

My dear Christian friend is probably tracking so far. But this is where I ask you to really buckle down, listen carefully, and give heed. Chapters 2-3 are not merely a gentle flick on the wrist to scold the churches before the apocalypse moves on to describing God’s wrath on the “real bad guys,” those unbelievers out there. I mean, you are right, the unbelievers really are real bad guys, and God’s wrath really is coming on them, yes that is true. But the problem revealed to us in Revelation is that the worldliness of the wicked world has infiltrated the churches (e.g. Jezebel and Balaam), such that whatever judgment is warranted upon the world is also warranted upon many of the churches and many in the churches.

To the extent that the practices of the churches are entangled in the Babylonian worldly system, to that same extent God’s judgment on both groups is intertwined. If God is judging the world, and churches are full of worldliness, then God’s judgment on the “household of God” is mixed together with that of “the ungodly and the sinner.”

The Apocalyptic vision did not forget about the churches at the start of chapter four. Even if the explicit focus on the churches moves into the background, they are still very much in the mind of the divine vision giver. When we finally see the ancient system of Babel-onian worldliness fall we see that, from God’s perspective, professing Christians have been living and participating in that City of Man:

“Come out of her, my people,
lest you take part in her sins,
lest you share in her plagues" (Rev 18:4).

So when John received this apocalyptic vision on Patmos something of great historic significance was about to happen. Indeed, in theological terms a new dispensation in redemptive history was about to begin. What was this big new thing? It was the judgment of the world beginning with the household of God. God’s judgment of the world — unleashing plagues and fire and war, etc. — has already begun, and in particular it started with His judgment on the churches.

You see, for about a generation or so, God kept sending apostolic and prophetic messages and epistles to exhort, rebuke, teach, and encourage the churches along the right path. But God was not going to play unilateral helicopter parent or co-dependent spouse forever. Just as God’s repeated warnings to adulterous Israel were finally exhausted and He sent her into Babylonian exile, likewise the churches.

God’s process of judging the world began by giving the churches over to Babylonian exile. “You love the Babylonian prostitute? You want to be like her? You want to lust after other lovers? OK, so go into Babylon where you belong,” the divine messenger says to the churches.

From a Protestant perspective, this makes a lot of sense out of church history. The churches were in a great big, gigantic, heap of messy spiritual trouble already at the close of the first century. And instead of continually “rescuing” them from their waywardness, the book of Revelation announces that God is going to allow the churches to experience the full consequences of their waywardness, just as He did with His people Israel. And so if there is to be a subsequent iteration of true, genuine, Christianity, it must be a restored remnant which “comes out” from this Babylonian captivity.

The book of Revelation is not primarily about the future. God’s judgment of the world has already begun. And, most notably, God’s judgment of the worldly church has already begun. The question now is whether or not you have, whether or not you will, “come out” from the Babylonian exile that that churches fell into.

Büyük Yanlış

Sevgili Hristiyanlar,

  1. Tanrı, Efes’in kandilliğini yerinden kaldırmak üzere gelmeye hazırdı.
  2. İzmir’deki imanlılar hapse atılmak ve “on gün” boyunca denenmek üzereydiler.
  3. İsa, Bergama’ya gelip “Balam”ın izleyicilerine ve Nikolas yanlılarına karşı savaşmaya hazır duruyordu.
  4. Rab, “İzebel”i hasta yatağına, onunla zina edenleri de büyük sıkıntıya atma sürecindeydi.
  5. Yedi yıldızı elinde tutan Kişi, Sardis kilisesine karşı hırsız gibi gelmeye hazırlanıyordu.
  6. Şeytan’ın havrasının üyeleri, Filadelfiyalı kutsalların ayakları önünde eğilmeye zorlanmak üzereydiler.

Çünkü yargının, Tanrının ev halkından başlayacağı an gelmiştir.
Bunun için, Tanrı’nın isteği uyarınca acı çekenler, iyilik ederek canlarını güvenilir Yaradan’a emanet etsinler.
